Located on a 137 m × 60 m site in Purulia, the Primary School is envisioned as a nurturing environment that blends functionality, climate responsiveness, and community spirit. The design moves beyond a conventional institutional building by integrating courtyards, open pathways, and natural materials, creating an academic setting that is both sustainable and humane.

The school adopts brickwork as its primary material, chosen for its local availability, durability, and timeless aesthetic. Exposed brick façades, punctuated by perforated screens, allow filtered light and breezes to flow through, creating naturally lit and ventilated interiors. The tactile quality of brick also gives the children a sense of warmth and familiarity, rooting the building in its regional context.

Each courtyard is designed not only as a transition space but as a learning and gathering environment—a place where children can interact, play, and engage with the outdoors. Shaded trees, landscaped patches, and seating zones transform these voids into active, open-air classrooms that promote creativity and social connection.

The architecture prioritizes light, openness, and a sense of belonging. Classrooms open towards green spaces, corridors double as social galleries, and courtyards dissolve the boundary between indoor and outdoor life. Together, these elements foster an atmosphere of joyful learning, discovery, and community engagement.

The planning is organized around a series of interconnected courtyards that link different classroom clusters. These courtyards not only structure circulation but also act as visual and social anchors, enabling children to experience nature as part of their daily routine. Pathways frame long visual axes, ensuring that classrooms, staff areas, and recreational spaces are tied together in a clear, cohesive manner.

The classrooms are oriented for ample daylight and cross-ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial systems and enhancing comfort. Corridors are widened into gallery-like spaces where movement merges with interaction, encouraging informal learning and play.

The Primary School at Purulia demonstrates how simple materials, thoughtful planning, and climate-sensitive design can redefine public education infrastructure. By balancing functionality with spatial richness, the project becomes more than a school—it becomes a vibrant environment where children grow, connect, and thrive.
