Ladies RPF Barrack at Kolkata Station

At Metropolitan Architecture & Consultancy Studio (MACS), we believe that architecture should do more than just meet the basic needs of a space—it should transform lives. The Ladies RPF Barrack at Kolkata Station redefines sustainable public infrastructure architecture by integrating bold aesthetics, innovative solutions, and sustainable practices. This project goes beyond mere functionality—it creates spaces that uplift users and set new standards for public architecture.

Addressing Challenges

The typical RPF barracks in India have traditionally been designed with basic functionality in mind. As a result, these structures often appear uninspiring, boxy, and non-aesthetic. They fail to address the emotional and physical comfort of their residents. The outdated design also led to energy inefficiencies and a lack of natural light.

RPF personnel living in these barracks have become accustomed to inefficient spatial layouts, limited privacy, and poor natural light. The existing spaces are often cramped and fail to meet modern comfort standards. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient recreational and social areas leaves residents with limited opportunities for relaxation and community engagement.

To address these issues, the design incorporates arched facades and perforated brick screens. These features allow natural light into the building while ensuring privacy and improving airflow. Additionally, the design incorporates strategic zoning, separating private living areas to optimize spatial planning and functionality. Energy-efficient materials and green roofs help minimize energy consumption, while eco-friendly building systems contribute to a reduced environmental footprint.

Design Process

Idea and Vision (Concept):

The design presents a modern approach to public infrastructure, blending functionalism with aesthetic appeal. Inspired by traditional railway architecture, the arched facade serves as a visual tribute to the past while embracing contemporary design. The perforated brick screens not only add beauty but also enhance the building’s practicality, ensuring privacy and natural ventilation.

Surrounding Context (Site Analysis, Access, and Approach):

The site is located at the heart of Kolkata Station, which posed challenges due to its proximity to high-traffic areas. Nevertheless, the design successfully ensured privacy for the residents while maintaining visual harmony with the station’s historical architecture. Key elements like circulation, access points, and view corridors were optimized for both safety and accessibility.

User Experience / Spatial Planning / Function:

A reinforced concrete frame was used to ensure the building’s stability and longevity. To keep costs in check and accelerate construction, modular techniques were employed. Using locally sourced materials, such as red brick, also helped reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building.

The interior layout maximizes space efficiency while ensuring comfort for the residents. By thoughtfully placing common areas, recreational spaces, and personal quarters, the design facilitates optimal circulation, significantly enhancing their overall living experience.

Materials and Façade:

The choice of brick for the facade combines aesthetic appeal with sustainability. Additionally, the perforated brick screens enhance natural ventilation and lighting, contributing to the building’s energy efficiency. These materials were carefully selected to reflect the local context while meeting practical requirements such as durability and low maintenance.

Construction Details (Structure):

Building Services:

The building integrates solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and rainwater harvesting systems to further enhance its sustainability. Additionally, the electrical and plumbing systems were designed with energy efficiency in mind, ensuring comfort for the residents while minimizing environmental impact.
